Daily Occupations/ Meaningful Activities

The many varied daily occupations/ meaningful activities of the Nepalese people.

Shop owner ( usually the shop is part of the house – grocery supplies , fresh fruit and vege, alcohol, material, clothes and shoes, hardware and building supplies, water stalls , and music shops of CD's and cassettes everywhere !( copied)

Selling Food: snacks, roasted nuts, momo (a type of boiled dim sim), noodles, full meals of rice and Dahl, barbecued maze.

Tending to the animals: buffalo ( milking) and goats and chickens-subsistence living

Handy craft: Sewing shops ( tailors) where all traditional garments are sewn, weaving cloth and mats for the home , tapestry and embroidery , metal work- bronze castings, wood carving -mask making , stone carving ( photos) , puppet making , painting –Thangkas traditional Tibetan Buddhist paintings and other paintings of the gods , bronze statues of gods, beaded and silver jewellery, Pashmina, Tibetan carpets, knife making (khukuri- the traditional knife of the Ghurkhas)

Trades: bicycle and rickshaw repairs, welding, brick making and umbrella repairs!

Tourism Hotel and Resort owners (yes Resorts! – not as we know them), guides

Gardening/ Agriculture- 40% of the country

Manufacturing & Industry

Working in the many Educational Institutes locally and in the main centres- Literacy 60%

Less common:

Government Jobs– in the main centre – e.g. Kathmandu, Pokhara, Dhran

Health – Health Care Assistance, Dr’s, Nurse, Physio
