The local alcohol is made from rice or sometimes maze and it is called ruxci. It is a a 'hard spirit' and tastes like whiskey. The neighbours make this and sell it to a local shop where it sells for around 20rupees a bottle( very cheap) . Unfortunately due to the availability and cheap price you occasionally see very intoxicated people around the village either acting strangely or passed out on the side of the road sleeping it off.
BJ Rai's mother makes ruxci and BJ kindly talked us through the process .
It is made over a fire in a type of double boiler where the vapour from the rice is decanted and captured . Mark would be much better explaining the process than me so I'll leave it there. I was more into tasting it! We shared a glass and it was very much like whiskey and water, ok ,but a bit rough . Not black Label Johnny Walker I'm afraid.
