An example of Physiotherapy in Nepalese villages - Chatara and Tamghas .
"The A Team arrive" . In our last week of our stay in Chatara two dynamic physiotherapy students arrived to volunteer for 1 month - Pradeep and Jawed. They were in their final year on a break and wanted some work experience prior to embarking on further study next year. Pradeep is hoping to study overseas in next year possibly , Canada to complete his Masters. The two very enthusiastic young men arrived with drive, energy ,passion and a commitment to get things happening, fast ! It was perfect timing considering we were leaving by the end of the week so the overlap meant the momentum for some of the CBR work that I had been doing could be maintained. Considering the village environment and poorly equipped centre clean we were working in they donned their white medical coats , brought out their goniometers, reflex testing ‘hammer’ , and then provided the committee with a list of equipment that they needed to provide in order for them to work. We embarked on a day of community visits to identify potential patients and the word was out, free physiotherapy treatment at the centre! People came out of the woodwork with all sorts of aches and pains and musculo skeletal injuries seeking a cure. From what I saw the mindset of the community and their belief in this type of treatment was that it offered the possibly a cure for their ailments.
Putting my personal and professional opinions aside on the need for this type of treatment in a developing country and where this fits into disability , these young men were inspirational , committed , open to learning about occupational therapy and we worked together as a team on cases, overlaying an occupational focus.
Thank you both for the opportunity to work and get to know you both !
